KISSology!
Hey. it has been a long time since I've written, so I figured I'd fire off an article about KISS since I always have something to say about them.I got KISSology for Christmas and I have to say it's pretty good. Actually it's really fucking good, which is surprising since KISS has put out nothing but shit for the last ten years! (The new Delicious Candy!*, edgier and with more swearing!)
That's not to say that it's perfect though, it could be a lot better, but let's start with what they did right.
First off, they had someone else do it. That was a good idea because Gene always screws things up by trying to cut corners on little things like design and interesting content.
Second, the shows they chose rule! This video actually made me like KISS again, and it's been a while since that's happened! Budokan and Cobo Hall are my faves, but they're all good. Third is they squeezed it all onto two discs instead of going for their usual "Let's stretch it out onto four or five discs so it'll seem like people are getting more and we can jack up the price" thing that they always seem to do. Did Gene Simmons die or something?
And lastly the commentary was pretty good. And here's where the complaints start, unfortunately.
The commentary was pretty good, but it seemed like it could have been a lot better. I would have like to have heard Ace and Peter on there, but I guess it just wasn't possible. who knows with those guys, right?
The extras are awesome, I love the Cadillac, Michigan documentary and the Mike Douglas interview. The reason this is in the complaints is that there should have been way more. I've seen the whole Mike Douglas interview on Youtube and it's a little bit longer, I would have like to have seen the entire thing on here. Or how about a full song (or more) from the high school gym in Cadillac? That show seemed like it was nuts, I'd like to see more of it! And the Paul Lynde Halloween special, they played three songs but only one is on the DVD, what's with that?
I suppose those aren't really bad complaints though, everything that's on there is good, I just know that 1974-1977 could easily have been a 10-disc set and they still would have had to leave some stuff out. Like the show where Ace got electrocuted, or the band pouring their blood in the Marvel comics ink vat, you know all that crazy stuff we've heard about for so long.
The Easter eggs are pretty rad though, the earliest known footage of KISS and the band playing at Ace Frehley's wedding. Well, tuning for 3 1/2 minutes, then playing...
Anyway, overall KISSology is a good DVD, I'm looking forward to the next two chapters. It makes me wonder though, are they going to completely ignore the 80's or just gloss over it really quickly? I hope they devote some time to it, that was hilarious.
